NOTHING SACRED
CREATED BY: JESSAMINE RAYE
Set in the early twentieth century, we follow Goldie surrounded by family that love her while learning the ways of her people, until the Indian Agents arrive to take her and her siblings away to Residential school.
Jessie Raye (Ginew Ikwe, Makwa ndodem) is of Mushkekowuk, Polish and British Isles descent. She is a writer, costumer and maker. Jessie was born in 1980 in the city area of Baawaating (Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario) in the traditional territories of the Anishinaabe. Currently residing in the traditional Territory of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island, (Durham region) she works in the film and television industry. Jessie began reclaiming her indigenous heritage as a way of reconnecting herself and her family with the history that had been taken from them more than 80 years ago. In 2007 the Truth and Reconciliation Commission brought attention to Canada’s residential school system. In learning of the unspeakable abuse and stolen culture resulting in intergenerational trauma for countless indigenous peoples, Jessie was moved to share what happened through her writing. She hopes that sharing the story of Nothing Sacred will help to educate Canadians and bring awareness to the continued healing being done by the indigenous community on Turtle Island.
